UNALTERABLY MALIGNANT
Unalterably Malignant
The first incident that made me suspect that there might be something seriously wrong with me occurred when I was about ten years old when I flung a large rock at my sister for teasing me.
It hit her and broke the skin on her head luckily she was not seriously injured but my memory of the size of the rock indicates that I could just as easily caused her permanent damage or even killed her.
Our senior citizen housekeeper interceded with my father and I was not beaten or punished; perhaps this is the reason why this incident made such a lasting impression on me but then again I do remember most of my life experiences with a clarity undiminished by the passage of time.
The incident that made me certain that there was something fundamentally wrong with me occurred on September 13, 1974 when I confronted my wife and her lover in an upscale Chinese restaurant in Premier Plaza in Saint Andrew, Jamaica.
I giggled insanely and proceeded to strike him with all my might, getting all my body weight behind the blow as I had been taught to do.
He fell to the ground then began to skitter crablike between the tables to escape my wrath driven by insane jealousy.
I armed myself with one of the glass candleholders sitting on a nearby table and threw it at him with unerring accuracy.
It struck him behind the ear and he fell to the ground unconscious, twitching spasmodically.
Again I escaped punishment for this act of violence; at that juncture of my life I was a Negotiating Officer employed to the National Workers Union responsible for representing thousands of workers employed in Public Utilities and heavy industry; and, I was a member of the Regional Executive of the Peoples National Party, the ruling party forming the government in my native land of Jamaica.
When I was arrested the Police Officer in charge of the Half-Way-Tree station called my boss Senator Carlyle Dunkley and told him to have me stop by the station to engage in what became an empty formality.
On my court day, everyone, the arresting officer, my erstwhile victim, my lawyer provided by Senator Dunkley; all requested that a no order be made in this case; and, a trifle reluctantly, the presiding judge granted this request.
What I am attempting to do is demonstrate by resurrecting these violent incidents from my past is demonstrate that the design for human existence, the ‘conscious and unconscious premises for thinking and action,’ that I have labeled coercion determined culture that I hold that all human beings on Planet Earth are agents of - is not only pervasive and ubiquitous but is unalterably malignant, inordinately vile and completely depraved.
This description of human culture is not exaggerated, nor am I engaging in excessive hyperbole, what I am doing is creating the accurate description of a fundamental characteristic affecting human existence that is the necessary prerequisite for urgently required and exceedingly positive cultural CHANGE.
I am suggesting that no description could effectively and adequately describe the real, monstrous, horrific magnitude of misery and suffering; the depths of degradation and depravity precipitated by the practice of this culture during the approximately One Hundred and Twelve Thousand years since it have been embraced by members of the human species.
I suggest that it is the root cause of all the atrocities, the incidents of man’s inhumanity to man that have occurred since the beginning of the human story.
I hold that it is the cause of all the suffering and meaningless, senseless deaths produced by the social institutions of feudalism and chattel slavery; of the atrocities committed during the Crusades and later during the Spanish Inquisition; it is responsible for the horrors and rigors of the Middle Passage; it facilitated the genocide committed against Native American populations in North and South America by so called Christian nations; it galvanized Germans to stuff six million Jews and other undesirables into Concentration Camps from which they never emerged alive; it was the ‘conscious and unconscious premises for thinking and action’ that precipitated the flow of the millions of human beings a virtual river of suffering and slaughter into the Siberian wastes as well as those that died in the Cultural Revolution and other purges in Communist China.
There is another critical component of this perennial and endless tragedy, the fact that the human psyche is divided into two compartments – the conscious and the subconscious.
This was the very critical adaptation that facilitated the newly emergent species, Homo sapiens, to demonstrate the capacity for language and learning and to transmit its culture from one generation to the next; while simultaneously being capable of the ferocity and savagery that made the species capable of competing with physically better adapted and more imposing denizens for existing energy resources in the ‘state of nature.’
Sadly, this adaptation also created in human beings a near unlimited capacity for self delusion.
It was this adaptation that permitted Christian Knights during the Crusades to slaughter Jews creating a pool of blood that covered the fetlocks of their chargers; it was this adaptation that facilitated the hierarchy of the Catholic Church to consign human beings to the rack for having the temerity to utter the heresy that the world was flat; it was this adaptation that permitted British seamen to cram white indentured servants and blacks kidnapped from Africa into small ships and subject these hapless individuals in their millions to the horrors and rigors of the Middle Passage; it was this adaptation that permitted Americans to claim to be a Christian nation while committing genocide against the Sioux, the Apache, and numerous other Native American tribes; it was this adaptation that allowed Germans to consign to the flames of crematoriums Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and other non Aryans that they deemed undesirables; it was this adaptation that facilitated my engaging a criminal assault against Ansel Beckford rendering him unconscious.
What I am trying to do is answer the question of why human beings are capable of savagery and brutality?
They are capable because for the first One Hundred Thousand years of human existence they languished in a ‘state of nature’ during which the only model for social interaction was the ubiquitous relations between predators and their prey in which one actor the prey gave its all including its life to satisfy the needs of the other actor the predator for energy resources; during this period human culture was determined, and human beings became habituated to the worldview that ‘might was right,’ they embraced the ethos of competition, the dominant roles of territorial predator and hapless prey, and, came to rely on coercion to motivate the other.
But this does not fully explain this capacity for violence, the other component of this is the fact that human beings are capable of acting without knowing what they are doing, they are capable of actions that originate in the subconscious compartments of their minds that are not mediated by intelligence or limited by the dictates of conscience therefore creating and recreating the ‘state of nature’ wherever they live, the social environment accurately described in the following with one very significant reservation:
In the classic conception of drama - as in the theoretical phase of a scientific study - the will of the actors was confined in the shackles of determinism. The outcome at the final curtain was predetermined by the opening up of the drama in the first act, accounting for all the conditions and causes of later developments. The protagonist carried his ultimate fate in his soul, while he was groping for his destiny. In life, while the drama is still unfolding - as in the practical phase of a study, when policy inferences are drawn from value premises as well as from premises based on empirical evidence - the will is instead assume to be free, within limits, to choose between alternative courses of action. History, then, is not taken to be predetermined but within the power of man to shape. And the drama thus conceived is not necessarily tragedy. (Myrdal 35)
This description assumes that the will of the actor is free to chose between alternative courses of action, I suggest that the will of members of the human species is not free, that human will continues to be confined in the shackles of determinism; that the will of human beings has not been freed by the practice of Christianity, by embracing socialism or democracy, or by any other ethical system.
The shackles of determinism has not been struck from the minds of those few of us down the long march of human history who have been lucky enough to be educated, that only telling the truth will make us free, will succeed where all else has failed in civilizing human beings – by transferring experience from the subconscious compartment of our minds to the conscious compartment where it can be mediated by intelligence and limited by the dictates of conscience.
The human story has been an account of unending and unrelieved tragedy because the dictums enunciated by the man called Jesus, the civilizing dictum enunciated by the man called Jesus who was the first human being to actually tell the truth until it made him free; was transformed into a form where it would perpetuate the status quo of coercion determined culture.
This was achieved by an alchemy of opportunism that transformed simply telling the truth into the supernatural ritual of possession by the Holy Ghost, while simultaneously creating a dogma composed of myths that posited a supernatural alternative to the process of evolution which human beings were conditioned to accept unquestioningly, blindly, on faith.
Thus was embedded in coercion determined culture an approach to all ethical systems that effectively and enduringly perpetuated this unalterably malignant design for human existence, all such systems were embraced in concept even while human beings in precept continued to be agents of coercion determined culture; as evidenced by the fact that the USA embraced democracy in concept even as it engaged in chattel slavery and committed genocide against Native American tribes; as evidenced by the fact Russians and Chinese embraced communism in concept even while millions were consigned to Siberia or killed in purges.
I wish to proclaim, freely confess and reiterate that as evidenced by the incidents of violence that I personally have engaged in that I was once a mindless, uncivilized agent of coercion determined culture.
The difference being, the monumental difference that transformed me from being the uncivilized caterpillar agent of coercion culture into a butterfly of civilized human being, was that in the small park in Tel Aviv, Israel that contains the memorial to those who needlessly and senselessly perished in what has become notorious as the Munich Massacre, a sculpture that depicts the unending struggle between good and evil - in October, 1975 I made the decision to tell the truth as much as was humanly possible for the rest of my life without regard to the impact on my existence or that of other human beings; and eventually won the battle between inside myself by choosing good and rejecting evil.
During the journey of discovery that resulted in this victory, I became aware that the battle was not between good and evil, a perspective of this struggle that contributed to perpetuating the status quo; but that what I was actually doing as I told the truth and did the right thing, was stripping from my consciousness layer by agonizing layer the ‘conscious and unconscious premises for thinking and action’ to which I had been conditioned while coming of age in a small, undistinguished, unremarkable outpost of western civilization.
I was renouncing and rejecting being an agent of coercion determined culture, which I am constrained to reiterate for emphasis, that its ideology is that ‘might is right,’ its ethos is competition, its dominant roles are territorial predator and hapless prey, which relies on overt and covert forms of coercion to motivate the other; and, adopting a culture I have labeled cooperative capitalism, whose ideology is that ‘right is might,’ whose ethos is cooperation, which relies on positive reinforcements to motivate the other.
Yes, I am pulling out all the stops because to the best of my knowledge I am the only individual in the past two thousand years who has had the courage, will and endurance to tell the truth until it made him free; and even more pertinently, there is unlikely to be another such individual before the human species succeeds in destroying the civilizations it has painstakingly and arduously constructed with the weapons of mass destruction it has devised.
I recently celebrated my sixty fourth birthday extremely ironically on September 11 and I have no idea how long I can continue to endure the sentence of homelessness that has been my lot for having the temerity to tell the truth and do the right thing while living first in Jamaica; and, laterally in the United States of America.
President Obama I have to admit was my last hope, the acid test of his character as far as I was concerned was whether he had the courage to accurately describe the reason for the decline in the education product; the inescapable, incontrovertible fact that this nation is being hoist on the petard of racism and so respond with compassion to the unenviable plight of the forty three million Americans who are illiterate or semi illiterate; whether he had the courage to belatedly confront the Teachers’ Union.
It has become painfully obvious, at least to me, that he is a gutless wonder content to be a Bush clone, or, the Oreo President, or, the Uncle Tom President but that he will never be the Change Agent President this nation so desperately needs.
I have tried to communicate those initiatives and policies in the decades of the Forties, Fifties and Sixties designed to in precept create a functioning democracy were a reaction to the threat posed by the Nazi/Nippon Axis closely followed by that posed by World Communism.
That the diminutions in these threats have created cultural imperatives that would tend to return us to the good old days dominated by coercion determined culture; as evidenced by the millions of individuals who have lost homes and jobs, the fact that the poverty rate is on the rise; and most demonstratively, the substantial increases in those who are illiterate or semi illiterate.
So I am constrained to declaim that I am homeless, that I live a nomadic existence haunting rest areas using their facilities to have a sponge bath and change of clothes every two days, that most days I purchase a Senior coffee for about eighty eight cents from a McDonalds with four creams and six sugars, this being the only hot item I can consume since food stamps cannot purchase hot food as a cashier in Crescent City, California was happy to inform me, since politicians whose popularity depends on keeping the majority poor, illiterate and incapable of connecting the dots by plying them with drugs and religion also deny them hot food; with this cup of coffee I eat a strawberry shortcake for breakfast six of these cost two dollars and fifty cents.
My only other meal is a can of meat for eighty eight cents which along with a crust of bread, the entire loaf costs one dollar and fifty cents in a Walmart, which I eat as late as possible so I am not too hungry to sleep so it is likely that since I have no access to healthcare that I will achieve longevity.
And this is not a sign saying I will work for food, nor am I soliciting donations, what I am doing is encouraging one American to tell the truth so that this message will not be silenced when I receive the balm of extended rest.
I know, you expect me to pander to your tender sensibilities with consoling lies; and, moreover you already tell the truth, but simultaneously you are agents of coercion determined culture and you are doing what it takes to make a living.
If you are a cop or a judge in a metropolitan area you are taking monies to facilitate the judge trade; if you are a member of the Border Patrol you are taking bribes to foster illegal immigration; if you are a teacher in the Public School system you are doing what is necessary to appear to be doing your job; if you are a refinery technician you are stealing gasoline; if you a politician you are doing what Governor Blagojevich did without being caught; and on and on and on.
If I am simply insane, which is quite possible, what is the problem in education? What is the reason for the economic decline and the decline in every social institution in what was until recently the richest nation on Planet Earth? What is cause of existence being a tragedy for the majority for the entire human story, and I am not talking about life for the five per cent who control ninety per cent of the wealth in every country?
The problem is human culture, it is unalterably malignant, inordinately vile and completely depraved and you would know this – if you did not live driven by impulses from the subconscious compartment of your mind, if you did not receive catharsis from watching television or from engaging in religious rituals and rites.
I say again, with morality anything and everything is possible, without morality the mess we are in is completely logical and understandable.
It is time for the change, the change that can only be accomplished by a bare majority telling the truth long enough to free the man or woman in their mirrors.
